Eritrea is the name of a region situated right to the north of the Horn of Africa, between the Red Sea and the Ethiopic Higlands, arid along the coast strip and with tropical climate inside and going south. It was an Italian colony since the end of last century until World War II, when became British protectorate. After that under Ethiopic control, only since first years of '90s has conquered his independance, first in Africa, after a war lasted 30 years and ended on 27 April 1993 with a popular referendum that declared the sovereignity of Eritrea.
Asmara, eritrean capital city, is the biggest city of the new Contry, populated mainly by descendant of nomad people. Even laying on a territory rich of mineral deposits, good start for an optimal industrialization of the Country, eritrean economy is based mainly on agricolture, still conducted with traditional systems, and on cattle-breeding.
Eritrea is a Country in full development, that after war horrors and the new identity just conquered, is going toward a long and hard reconstruction. The biggest obstacle is in communication routes, absolutely insufficient to allow a complete development of an industrial kind economy. Of all the principal roads that run across the territory, only a little are asphalted, and a smaller part of them is usable for all the year. The few kilometers of railroads were disbanded during the war to build trenches and are about to be rebuilt. For all these factors, eritrean industry remains localized in principal cities and is characterized by extraction activities, mainly about salt, a product that Eritrea is rich of.
Cereals and spices are the principal products of agricolture, while coffee, that has a strong importance as a drink in eritrean people traditions, is maybe the most important product of the exportations. In slow development with agricolture is also cattle-breeding, and with the activities that mostly help the reconstruction of economy there is sea-fishing, conducted on Red Sea coasts.
